My New Year Wish

A decade ago, I wrote:

May your coming year be filled with magic and dreams and good madness. I hope you read some fine books and kiss someone who thinks you're wonderful, and don't forget to make some art -- write or draw or build or sing or live as only you can. And I hope, somewhere in the next year, you surprise yourself.

And almost half a decade ago I said,

...I hope you will have a wonderful year, that you'll dream dangerously and outrageously, that you'll make something that didn't exist before you made it, that you will be loved and that you will be liked, and that you will have people to love and to like in return. And, most importantly (because I think there should be more kindness and more wisdom in the world right now), that you will, when you need to be, be wise, and that you will always be kind.

And for this year, my wish for each of us is small and very simple.

And it's this.

I hope that in this year to come, you make mistakes.

Because if you are making mistakes, then you are making new things, trying new things, learning, living, pushing yourself, changing yourself, changing your world. You're doing things you've never done before, and more importantly, you're Doing Something.

So that's my wish for you, and all of us, and my wish for myself. Make New Mistakes. Make glorious, amazing mistakes. Make mistakes nobody's ever made before. Don't freeze, don't stop, don't worry that it isn't good enough, or it isn't perfect, whatever it is: art, or love, or work or family or life.

Whatever it is you're scared of doing, Do it.

Make your mistakes, next year and forever.

Happily Ever After Starts Here!

Sometimes you just fall in love. From the very first moment, moons and rainbows, smitten, head over heels and all of it. This was what happened when I first met Ashley and Christian, whose indescribably wonderful wedding is up today on Style Me Pretty.

When I drove up to Saddlerock Ranch that day, and saw what was being created, I pretty much fainted. Niki and Rene of R. Jack Balthazar simply outdid themselves (you'll just have to look for yourself to see!). We were starting the awesome task of capturing this utterly amazing, transportive space, when the first few drops of rain started to fall. Rene and I looked at each other and said a little prayer, and kept working. The clouds were forming, dark, in the sky. But only a drop or two (so far!). We went on...the rain held off. We shot portraits. We shot more details and MORE details and MORE details (click the link! LOL). And then the ceremony. More clouds in the sky, but pure happiness on the ground below. And then, the most amazing thing happened. The wind picked up, just for a moment, and the little bells that were tied to the ribbons that adorned the wedding structure started to tinkle (if you want to see them, CLICK THE LINK! CLICK THE LINK! LOLOL)...and at that moment the clouds parted and the sun burst through. Everyone simply gasped. And there were the horses - did I mention the horses who accosted us in a field of mustard flowers and tried to eat Ashley's bouquet? They were there too. You can see THAT by going YOU-KNOW-WHERE and watching Living Cinema's beautiful film!

And That Was How It Was, All Day Long. Ashley And Christian, I adore you - thank you thank you for letting me be a part of your day.

Through The Past...

I recently walked past an empty lot in Venice, where I had photographed the wedding portraits of a sweet couple years ago. The bride and groom got ready together in their bungalow across the street, and told me it was their dream to buy it someday. Sometimes I have the luck of knowing my clients for years, and other times, people slip away - it's a strange thing to share so much intimacy with someone, only to have them disappear into their lives. I often wonder what happened to them - to hear their story - did they buy the lot? Do they have a home of happy kids or maybe just a dog or two? But for now, here is Ann and Michael...I hope they are well and good...

As a photographer, I am so lucky to be able to work in an industry that does so much to celebrate love and family. I am so lucky to have this job, and to be able to share such happiness.

Right now, in Japan, so many families are suffering tremendous loss, confusion, and pain. Not only have they lost friends and loved ones, but basic needs like food and shelter are now scarce for many. Many blogs, as well as my own, that celebrate the wedding industry have agreed to stop posting for one day, and to use that day to raise funds via their blogs.

The immediate need for help for those in Japan is the dire need for shelter. It is because of this need that the wonderful blogs, Utterly Engaged and Ever Ours, who have started this Blogger's Day Of Silence, have handpicked ShelterBox as the organization to donate to.

ShelterBox provide emergency shelter and lifesaving supplies for families around the world who are affected by disasters at the time when they need it the most. Each large green ShelterBox is tailored to a disaster but typically contains a disaster relief tent for an extended family, blankets, water storage and purification equipment, cooking utensils, a stove, a basic tool kit, a children’s activity pack and other vital items. A whole box costs $1,000 (US), and initially, this effort's goal was to raise $5500. Because of the generosity of so many of you, they have, at the time I am writing this post, raised over $19,000, and counting...

For Carl, my old boy, who can hardly see or hear, who waits patiently every day for his walk and his dinner, the greatest gentleman and the best dog I have ever known...and for Gracie, who brings me the laundry, piece by piece, from the pile on the floor, dropping it at my feet by my chair while I work, who wakes me up in the middle of the night, every night, with her furry face, just to check on me...to say that I love you is not even close to enough. Who in the world is ever so happy to see me, even if I've only been gone for 10 minutes?

Fall...

It's my favorite time of year. I love browns and greens and yellows and oranges and near-naked trees. I love to wear boots and layers and long sweaters. The summer's bounty of crops from our yard wanes a bit, but the best tomatoes are still ripening. It's still warm in the daytime, yet there is a bite in the air, especially at night. I love the Harvest Moon and the Equinox, and the days, albeit shorter, do not go dark at 5:00, (which I really really hate!).

It's almost time to light the fire and read and knit.

It All Comes Down To Martha...

I have some very special news - one of my all time favorite weddings is being featured on Martha Stewart Weddings. It is our very first feature with them, and I am so excited. The editor, Darcy Miller, also chose it for her "Darcy's Idea Of The Day"!

Lovely Kristina and Jesse's wedding took place in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, at the exquisite home of the bride's father. I got to work with the most extraordinary team that one could ever imagine. An extra special thank you to Yifat Oren, who designed and coordinated this event - a day that was so beautiful and so magical and spectacular that it took all of my self control to keep from crying all day long. It is always an incredible honor to be published, but for many reasons, this one is particularly heartfelt. Most people don't know this, but I photographed my very first wedding because of Martha Stewart and Stacey Wing-Zarcoff. Stacey was a client of my husband's, and she approached me 14 years ago about shooting her wedding. At the time, I was a rock and roll photographer, and that, paired with a hard-earned BFA in photography from Art Center College of Design, made the idea of shooting a wedding was simply, well, awful! Back then, "real" photographers would hang their heads if they were doing weddings...but Stacey persisted, and one day, she showed me an early issue of Martha Stewart Weddings. It may have been the very first one. I will never forget my reaction, ("you can do THAT?"). I had never seen anything so beautiful. I went from snobby / judgemental to humbled / blown away, and I took the job. I loved it. And with some prodding from Fred, soon enough, I switched my torn jeans and Doc Martins for a great black suit and never looked back. Yes, it does feel great to photograph Joni Mitchell...of course it does. But, in all honesty, nothing is more amazing than handing my clients their finished album, knowing that they will keep it and hand it down to generations yet unborn. It is what will live on after me.

Cypress Albums

Although I'm not new to blogging, I'm still trying to work out what this particular blog's personality should be. I don't simply want to post weddings and engagement shoots...sometimes it'll just be a photo I like, or simply something beautiful. Today, my simply something beautiful is Cypress Albums. Dena, the incredible artist behind the albums and owner of the company, just did a lovely blog post that featured some of my work. We have become dear friends over the years - I simply adore her. I have had the luck and honor to photograph her products for her website and advertising for quite some time as well, and it is one of my favorite things to do.

I love the idea of putting your wedding in a box. What if you were to make an album that tells the story of your wedding, and then choose the 15 or 20 most beautiful photos, and put them into one of these gorgeous boxes?

All of Cypress's products are created by hand at their bindery in Glendale, CA. They are simply stunning, and are like nothing else I have ever seen (and I've seen it all!). Their staff is absolutely wonderful. Thank you for making such fine and sensual and luxurious places for my work to rest in...

I love photographing my clients prior to their weddings. We plan a fun filled afternoon, including food of course, and take tons of pictures. Here are a few of my favorite shoots. I love the way each couple's personalities are reflected in the locations we chose, the outfits they brought, and the energy they projected. Each shoot has a wonderful story.

Rebecca And Ben have the most fabulous style. We went to the Botanical Gardens in Santa Barbara to do this shoot, and found this amazing little meadow, filled with yellow flowers. We couldn't have been more lucky!
Their wedding at the Santa Barbara Zoo was to die for.

Fancy and Adrian's Bacara wedding was one of the most unique and breathtaking events I have ever experienced. Fancy comes from one of the original Las Vegas casino families, and we chose to do their engagement portraits in and around the Fremont area of Vegas, as well as at The Boneyard, which is where the neon signs from their casinos are stored. We finished the day at The Little Church of the West, where Fancy's parents were married. They went to thrift stores prior to the shoot to find vintage 1960s outfits to wear...what a fun day.

PJ and Amanda and I spent a beautiful afternoon driving around downtown Los Angeles. We shot photos all over the place, and had the most wonderful time. They had the lovliest Palm Springs wedding, which is featured on my website! I adore them, and we have become dear friends. Amanda is an incredible hostess, and PJ is an absolutely gifted chef. We have had the most amazing dinners at their home!

Welcome To The World, Olivia And Charlotte!!!

My lovely clients, Jamie and Mike, just had twin girls and I had the luck of spending a beautiful afternoon with them a few weeks ago...

It is an amazing thing to watch them, so new, moving through their day. Every moment is gentle and magic and overflowing with sweetness. Mike and Jamie are filled with grace as they juggle two babies all day long. It was pure happiness to be with them.

I photographed Jamie and Mike's wedding a few years ago. Jamie had the most incredible Carolina Herrera gown. I will never forget it! It was positively the highlight of my year. Here are some photos...a tiny peek back in time...

Junebug Weddings!

Today is the official launch of Junebug Weddings' Southern California Hotlist, and I'm lucky and proud to be one of their photographers!

If you didn't happen to know about Junebug, it was founded in Seattle, and the site is absolutely stunning. Blair, Christy, and Kim (the nicest, loveliest fashionistas you could ever meet!) have created a style guide like no other. They have been best friends for years and years, and were full time wedding photographers, which tells us why they pick such amazing weddings and fabulous ideas to feature on their website every day. I have been following Junebug for months. It is the BOMB. I especially love Groombug, which caters to the oft overlooked boys...

Calling All Photographers!!!

Good Morning!!!
Just wanted to let everyone know that my 6-week workshop at Julia Dean's amazing photography school still has a few spots left!

We will meet six times...
There will be two photo shoots with models and wardrobe. There will also be guest speakers, and the rest of the time, we will focus on business: contracts, marketing, promotion...you name it!!! I have been teaching this workshop for about six years...it is a blast, and filled with information. It is part lecture, part round table discussion, and 100% demystification.
